Submissions

We welcome proposals for feature articles and article for our departments, which are essays on people, events, and ideas that have shaped American history, the places where American history was made, the visual record of the American past, and on the documentary record, explaining how we know about particular people, events, and ideas.

We’re looking for original historical writing, reflection, and commentary that engages a broad audience of thoughtful readers. Feature articles are generally 2,500 to 5,000 words and occasionally longer. Department essays are generally 1,500 to 2,500 words.

We encourage authors of new books to submit articles based on their books and welcome authors of articles for professional journal to send us pieces presenting their findings to a broader popular audience.

We pay our authors on acceptance of their work.

We also welcome proposals for reviews of books and motion pictures. We are most interested in reviewing books in broad circulation that an active reader is likely to encounter whether we review them or not. Such reviews may be positive, negative, or mixed. We also want to review worthwhile books our readers might otherwise miss. We don’t want to review obscure and unsatisfactory books our readers can safely ignore. We will pass over them in silence. We also welcome proposals for essay reviews, in which the writer examines a group of books on a topic and assesses their relative merits. Occasionally we will review an old book — to consider its enduring merits, usually, and commend it to our readers.

To propose an article to The American Crisis, send a description of your idea to editor@americanideal.org. Don’t send us a manuscript before receiving a reply, which we will send within five business days.
